Enjoy a brief riding tour of the UIC campus…
Located just west of Chicago’s Loop, UIC is the largest institution
of higher learning in the Chicago area. The campus enrolls
almost 25,000 students, employs more than 11,000 people, and has an annual
budget of
over $1 billion dollars.
UIC was formed in 1982 by the consolidation of two University
of Illinois campuses: the Medical Center campus, which
dates back to the 19th century, and the comprehensive
Chicago Circle campus which opened
in 1965. The campus now has more than 100 buildings that
cover 300 acres. In 2002, UIC was presented with the
first annual
AUREO Award of Excellence
for its South Campus project — a mixed-use project including student
housing, retail, campus offices and almost 900 private residential
units.
Optional; sign up at conference
check-in (on-site)
Monday, August 14 — Reservation at 6:30 p.m.
| This
event is optional. There is no fee to sign up, but all participants
are responsible for their own restaurant charges. Those who participate
in the campus tour will be dropped off at their dining destinations.
DineAround participants who do not participate in the tour will
be responsible for getting to their chosen restaurants on their
own. All diners will be on their own for the return trip to the
hotel.

Chicago is known for its ethnic neighborhoods and international dining
adventures. Your AUREO hosts invite you to join a group for
dinner in one of the following neighborhoods — all within a short
distance of the UIC campus.
Greektown
Located immediately north of the campus, along Halsted Street,
this near west community is no longer a neighborhood of immigrants,
but it remains Chicago’s headquarters for Greek dining and culture. In
addition to its many lively restaurants and cafes, the Hellenic Museum
and Cultural Center is located here.
Chinatown
You’ll discover this vibrant community just a few minutes south of
the campus. In addition to enjoying the best of Chinese regional
cooking, you can stroll the streets and shop for gifts, herbs
and teas, or even
exotic ingredients at an Asian grocery store.
Little Italy
This charming neighborhood is centered around Taylor Street
and connects the two sides of the campus. While the presence UIC and
the ongoing gentrification of the near-west side have brought considerable
changes to the area (not all welcome by the locals), it still retains
a distinctly Italian character and continues to be known for its family-owned
restaurants.
Pilsen (Mexican)
Before WW II, this neighborhood (just south of the campus)
was home to the nation's largest Bohemian-American settlements
(Pilsen derives its name from a city in Bohemia). Now home
to Mexican immigrants, it is alive with colorful murals on
local buildings, authentic
Mexican
restaurants and shops, art galleries, and the acclaimed Mexican
Fine Arts Center Museum (the nation's largest Latino museum).
Tuesday, August 15 — Boat boarding: 4:30 – 5:00 p.m.
Cruise and dinner: 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Note: Chicago’s weather can be
changeable, so be sure to have a sweater or jacket and an umbrella
with you,
just in case.
| This
event is included with registration, but advance reservations
are required. (See registration form.) The boat will be available
for boarding at 4:30 p.m. and will leave the dock promptly at
5:00 p.m. The boat dock is just a few blocks from the Fairmont,
so no transportation service will be provided. The boat will
return to the dock at 8:00 p.m.

All aboard for a late afternoon departure on Chicago's First Lady! This
is a private cruise for AUREO attendees. The climate controlled
salon deck of
Chicago’s First Lady offers comfort and elegance while the open
air upper deck offers a unique experience for cruising Chicago's
waterways.
As we enjoy cocktails (open bar) and a light supper, our
captain will provide commentary on Chicago history and the
architecture and design
of the famous buildings
that make Chicago’s skyline one of the most spectacular in the world.
