Asian University for Women
The Asian University for Women (AUW) has its roots in a World Bank/UNESCO
Task Force on Higher Education which engaged leaders from government,
business and academia in an inquiry as to the state of higher education
in developing countries and outlined broad international strategies
for addressing them (see www.tthe.net/report). Several Task Force
members went on to establish the Asian University Support Foundation
and attract financial, technical and intellectual resources in the
United States and internationally for the launching of the University.
The Foundation will provide ongoing support from its offices in
Cambridge, Massachusetts once the University is established.
The University promises to be a vibrant, residential learning community
where highly talented women from a mix of economic, cultural, and
religious backgrounds can reach their full intellectual and personal
potential. It will enable women to become effective professionals,
leaders and public-oriented citizens. AUW will serve as a beacon
for those striving to raise educational standards and leaderships
opportunities for women and will encourage regional cooperation
and understanding among the people of Asia.
Gather data, interpret needs, conduct interviews and develop and
analyze options for projects.
At full capacity AUW will serve approximately 2500 exceptional young
Asian women from diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds,
including rural areas and refugee communities. Initial recruitment
efforts will focus on South and Southeast Asia and later expand
throughout Asia and the Middle East. For promising students who
are not fully prepared for University education, the University
will offer a one-year, preparatory Access Academy program for approximately
250 students.
The University will draw upon the best models of instruction regardless
of origin and will be taught by a faculty recruited from around
the world. The academic program will be designed to cultivate the
perspectives and skills most useful for developing the region in
enlightened, sustainable and culturally sensitive ways. It will
combine the greatest strengths of an education steeped in critical
inquiry with the perspectives and concerns of Asia.
The curriculum will feature a "three plus two" model of
undergraduate and graduate study. The undergraduate liberal learning
model - with attention to the development of critical thinking,
quantitative reasoning, communication skills and fundamental training
in the basics - will instill essential competencies for future leaders.
The final two years will offer graduate education in fields selected
for their relevance to the economic and political realities alumnae
are likely to encounter. The target student /faculty ratio is 13:1.
A great deal of work has already been done. A Support Foundation
Board, an International Support Committee and a Bangladesh Board
of Advisers have been established. Considerable resources have been
