AUREO was established in October 1983 as a small, informal, unincorporated organization of about 25 institutions. Its member institutions now represent most major universities in the United States and Canada.

Purpose

To advance by lawful means the common interests of colleges and universities relating to real estate administration, including management, leasing, investment, development, acquisition and disposition. The membership enjoys the relatively small size of the group and the resultant ability to be candid with one another. The members frequently communicate during the year with one another by telephone, the internet, or letter, thus maintaining a network for problem solving. AUREO is a member of CHEMA, the Council of Higher Education Management Associations, an informal voluntary assembly of management-oriented higher education associations in the U.S. and Canada working to maximize their resources and enhance operational capabilities to achieve strategic goals and create substantial benefits for the colleges and universities they represent.
